IELTS vs CELPIP: Which Language Test Is Right for You?

Feb 28, 2026

For Canadian immigration, you need to prove your English proficiency through an approved language test. The two main options are IELTS General Training and CELPIP General.

IELTS is the most widely recognized English test globally. It's available in almost every country and is accepted for both immigration and academic purposes. The format includes listening, reading, writing, and speaking sections.

CELPIP is a Canadian test, entirely computer-based, including the speaking section (you speak to a computer, not a person). Many test-takers find this less stressful than the face-to-face IELTS speaking test.

Both tests map to the Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) levels used in immigration scoring. A CLB 7 across all four skills is typically the minimum for Express Entry's Federal Skilled Worker program.

Our recommendation: If you're comfortable with computers and prefer a less formal speaking test, try CELPIP. If you want wider availability and are comfortable with face-to-face interviews, IELTS is a solid choice.
