Open vs Closed Work Permits: Understanding Your Options

Feb 28, 2026

Canada offers two main types of work permits: open work permits and employer-specific (closed) work permits. Understanding the difference is crucial for planning your Canadian career.

An open work permit allows you to work for any employer in Canada (with some exceptions). You don't need a specific job offer or LMIA. Examples include Post-Graduation Work Permits (PGWP), spousal open work permits, and some humanitarian permits.

An employer-specific work permit ties you to a specific employer, position, and location. You'll need a job offer and usually an LMIA (Labour Market Impact Assessment) from your employer.

The PGWP is one of the most popular open work permits. After completing a program at a designated institution, you can get a work permit for 8 months to 3 years depending on your program length.

Spousal open work permits are available when your spouse is studying, working, or has applied for permanent residence. This is a great way for families to build Canadian experience together.
